Luther Sutton

Luther was born July 4, 1834 in Ohio.  He was the 6th child of David Hopwood and Lucy Wells.  The earliest I can find him named on a census is 1870 in Charles City, Iowa.  He would have been only 7 years old when his father died and 13 when his mother died.  He is not listed in the 1850 census in Steuben County, and have not been able to locate him in the 1860 census.   Luther is a clergyman and we know he lives in Wisconsin because 4 of his children are born there.  There is a Luther Sutton who purchased 40 Acres in Branch County, Michigan in 1854, but I can not verify that this is the same gentleman.

He marries Jane Hubble who was born in Canada in 1838.  They have 7 children:

Moses E. 1862-1916
Mary M. 1863-
Abraham Lincoln 1866-1927; He a district Judge in the early 1900's in Nebraska
Ulysses Grant 1869-
David Mark 1873-1953; He moves back to Indiana where he raises his own children.
Charles W. 1880-
Alfred L. 1881-1901; dies at an early age due to drowning.

Somewhere between 1881 and 1900, Luther and family move back to Indiana where they are listed on the 1900 census.   He dies in 1908, Steuben County, Indiana.

Update:  I just found his marriage location and date, He married in Dane County, Wisconsin on May 7, 1860.

July, 14, 2010 Update: I just received his obit from the nice folks at Carnegie Library in Angola.

Luther Sutton was born in Allen county Ohio July 4th 1834 and died at his home in Steuben Township, Steuben County, Ind., April 16, 1908. Aged 73 years, 9 months and 12 days.

When a young man he went west and on April 7, 1859 at Ruthland, Vermon, was joined in Marriage with Miss Jane Hubbell, and to the union were born seven children, Moses E. and Abraham L. of Omaha, Nebraska; Mary Sutton Morgan and Charles Sutton of Cleveland, Ohio; Ulysses G. of Montana; David M. of Pleasant Lake and Alfred, deceased.

In the death of Mr. Sutton a good man, husband and father has fallen.  His life knew the toll and hardship of primitive days. Belief in an over ruling power was as natural as the air and sunshine, and who would desire to take away the solace and comfort of such a belief.

Funeral services were held at the South Scott church on Sunday afternoon, April 19, conducted by Elder Vernon Stauffer.
