Roswell Sutton (jr)

Roswell Sutton was born Apr 27, 1854 in Scott City, Steuben County, Indiana.  He is the last child of Roswell and Nancy McMinn.  He married Emma Jane Waller  Aug 27, 1876 at the age of 22.  They lived on the Waller Farm according to the 1880 census. They had 4 children:

Delevan Roswell 1877-1935
Robert Jacob 1880-1950
Lela Dora 1882-1960
Orville 1884-1932

A story told by Lela D. Sutton..." Another incident, when my father hired a young Frenchman to work for us, an after he had been with us for some time, he watched my father get ready for church.  As I remember, he (the Frenchman) sat opposite me,  as I sat in my little rocking chair. I watched him also as he primped in front of the mirror.  He finally made some complimentary remark about the his suit, then said he was going to a party the next evening, and asked if he could borrow the clothes.  He (Roswell) told him he could, so when the next evening rolled around, he donned the outfit and headed West. It was "Good-bye" suit and all.  This fellow's name was Henry Barjarow.

...I guess I have said plenty, but there is one thing more.  I would like to pay special tribute to my dear parents and my dear brothers, which is the most impartant and nearest to my heart. My father and mother were born in Scott Township, Steuben County, Indiana of English and Irish descent, very quiet folks; and as an old neighbor (Billie Burkett) said on time, "Those Suttons are the most independent folks I ever saw".  There was never much illness in our family, only temporary contagion, with the exception of an accident my parent suffered in a runaway as they were on their way to church.  The colt they were driving took fright at a coat hanging on a bridge, which was getting a fresh coat of paint.  My father had two ribs broken and my mother was laid up for a few days.

My mother took the place of nurse, doctor, and undertaker in the neighborhood when needed. My father likewise always befriended and was willing to lend a helping hand as a neighbor and friend.  While they never accumulated a lot of material wealth, I feel this means more to me than any thing else. Their home was known to all the vagrant train, and as I remember , no tramp was ever turned away.  Many changes have taken place since that day...."

Obit: Steuben Republic

Roswell Sutton son of Roswell Sutton and Nancy McMinn Sutton was the youngest of five children born in Scott Township, Steuben County, Indiana, April 27, 1854, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Clarence Hanselman, January 10, 1930, aged 75 years, 8 months and 13 days.
His entire life was spent in Scott township except for the last few years which were spent at his home in Angola.
In 1877 he was married to Emma Jane Waller, who departed this life March 29, 1912. To this union four children were born, Delevan Sutton and Mrs Clarence Hanselman of Otsego township, Robert of Angola and Orvill of Jamestown township.  Besides the sorrowing children he leaves, three daughters in law and on son-in-law, twenty-two grandchildren together with a host of relatives and friends to mourn the loss of a loving father, obliging neighbor and a good citizen. He was a highly beloved citizen in the community in which he lived and was ever ready with a kind heart and a helping hand to aid those in need. It is with aching hearts we give him up but it was his will, not ours, and in the voice of the Savior we will say "Thy good and faithful now enter thy rest"

Ezekiel Sutton

Ezekiel was born about 1835 in Ohio and was the last of David and Lucy's children.  He was the youngest and went to live with his sister Sophronia when their parents both past.  This is according to the 1850 census.  In 1860 he marries Sarrah Ann Egbert and gets a divorce in 1865.  They had one child Lucy A who is born in 1861 but dies in 1865.   There is no census for 1870, but he is living with brother David and Franklin in 1880 in Steuben County.  1900 I believe he is living in Florida with a nephew named Elmer, son of George W, who is the son of Ezekiel's brother Franklin.  In his sisters obit, it mentions that she has three surviving brothers, so this mean Ezekiel is still alive in 1905.  No other records have been located.

Update: Ezekiel was born January 2, 1836 in Wood County, Ohio. Died 24 Apr 1921 Anderson, Madison, Indiana

Ezekiel lived in Florida and is shown on the 1900 census in Polk County, Florida.  He lived with his nephew for a short time and ended up moving back to Indiana.  On November 3, 1909 he went to the Anderson Old Peoples Home staying until his death in 1921.

Bio: From the Old Peoples Home Pamphlet at Anderson University archives. Page 10
Ezekiel Sutton Aged 77 years
Being alone in his old age, he was glad to leave him place of adobe in Florida and come to Anderson Old People's Home, which he very much appreciates.  Brother Sutton was born in Wood County, Ohio, January 2, 1836, and spent most of his life near Angola, Ind., after which he spent some time in Florida and came to the Home, November 3, 1909. His wife, father, mother, brothers, and sisters are all gone on before to the world beyond, and he is now unable to work and is only waiting for the summons.  He says, "I know I am saved and ready to go at any time. It is not my disposition to have much to say, but I enjoy the meetings and family worship in the chapel of the Home."

Obit: Ezekiel Sutton, age 85, died last night at the Old Peoples' Home at the Gospel Trumpet chapel with burial in the Home cemetery.  Mr Sutton came here from Florida some time ago to enter the home.  He has no relatives.

Luther Sutton

Luther was born July 4, 1834 in Ohio.  He was the 6th child of David Hopwood and Lucy Wells.  The earliest I can find him named on a census is 1870 in Charles City, Iowa.  He would have been only 7 years old when his father died and 13 when his mother died.  He is not listed in the 1850 census in Steuben County, and have not been able to locate him in the 1860 census.   Luther is a clergyman and we know he lives in Wisconsin because 4 of his children are born there.  There is a Luther Sutton who purchased 40 Acres in Branch County, Michigan in 1854, but I can not verify that this is the same gentleman.

He marries Jane Hubble who was born in Canada in 1838.  They have 7 children:

Moses E. 1862-1916
Mary M. 1863-
Abraham Lincoln 1866-1927; He a district Judge in the early 1900's in Nebraska
Ulysses Grant 1869-
David Mark 1873-1953; He moves back to Indiana where he raises his own children.
Charles W. 1880-
Alfred L. 1881-1901; dies at an early age due to drowning.

Somewhere between 1881 and 1900, Luther and family move back to Indiana where they are listed on the 1900 census.   He dies in 1908, Steuben County, Indiana.

Update:  I just found his marriage location and date, He married in Dane County, Wisconsin on May 7, 1860.

July, 14, 2010 Update: I just received his obit from the nice folks at Carnegie Library in Angola.

Luther Sutton was born in Allen county Ohio July 4th 1834 and died at his home in Steuben Township, Steuben County, Ind., April 16, 1908. Aged 73 years, 9 months and 12 days.

When a young man he went west and on April 7, 1859 at Ruthland, Vermon, was joined in Marriage with Miss Jane Hubbell, and to the union were born seven children, Moses E. and Abraham L. of Omaha, Nebraska; Mary Sutton Morgan and Charles Sutton of Cleveland, Ohio; Ulysses G. of Montana; David M. of Pleasant Lake and Alfred, deceased.

In the death of Mr. Sutton a good man, husband and father has fallen.  His life knew the toll and hardship of primitive days. Belief in an over ruling power was as natural as the air and sunshine, and who would desire to take away the solace and comfort of such a belief.

Funeral services were held at the South Scott church on Sunday afternoon, April 19, conducted by Elder Vernon Stauffer.
